Have You Heard About Naked Bike Day?

In Culture, Freedom, Funny Stuff, Wild Stuff on June 21, 2011 at 8:44 pm

If you haven’t, you should check this out. Obviously if you have a cause you feel passionately about, you should promote it by going naked. Just make sure to pick your weather carefully if you want a big turnout.

It was a typical early summer evening in Portland: cloudy skies threatening rain, temperatures in the mid-60s, and thousands of naked bicyclists gathered near the city’s waterfront for a clothing-free night ride.

The Portland version of the World Naked Bike Ride was about to begin.

“It is the most liberating, natural feeling possible,” said Brooklyn Jay, who came all the way from Phoenix for the ride.

World Naked Bike Ride is a globally observed event among hard-core bikers designed, at least ostensibly, to promote the use of the bicycle for transportation. But Portland cyclists have been especially adamant about making it another of the Pacific Northwest city’s quirky traditions. Read the rest of this entry »

The Weird Differences Between Men And Women

In Funny Stuff, Mind-Body, Relationships, Strange Oddities on June 9, 2011 at 2:00 am

Why are men and women wired so differently? Like take the word “wired” for instance, change the letter sequence slightly and you get “weird”.

That’s kinda the way it works when you put men and women together sometimes. They’re both human, but weirdly different.

The difference between the sexes may boil down to this: dividing the tasks of processing experience. Male and female minds are innately drawn to different aspects of the world around them.

Women’s perceptual skills are oriented to quick — call it intuitive — people reading. Females are gifted at detecting the feelings and thoughts of others, inferring intentions, absorbing contextual clues and responding in emotionally appropriate ways. They empathize. Tuned to others, they more readily see alternate sides of an argument. Such empathy fosters communication and primes females for attachment.

Women, in other words, seem to be hard-wired for a top-down, big-picture take. Men might be programmed to look at things from the bottom up (no surprise there). Read the rest of this entry »

Kitten Won’t Give Up The Cigarettes

In Funny Stuff, Life, Quality of Life on May 13, 2011 at 3:03 am

Cats are funny little creatures. They are infinitely curious and never seem to tire watching us;  no doubt trying to figure out what we’re doing so they can try it too. Especially kittens. They’re in the middle of everything!

Occasionally they pick up on our bad habits too. That’s when things get really crazy, or in this case really funny. This kitten has got a serious one-pack-a-day cigarette habit and he’s not happy about having to give it up. In fact, he’s not giving it up!

So his owners have decided to do an intervention. They’ve caught him red-handed with the cigarette hanging out of his mouth and have decided it’s time for him to kick the habit cold-turkey. But he’s not going down without a fight.

Check out the video on the next page for round one! Read the rest of this entry »

Fly With Your Own Personal Jet Pack

In Freedom, Fun Technology, Funny Stuff, Wild Stuff on May 9, 2011 at 10:45 pm

You have been dreaming about flying a personal jetpack for way too long. Your wait is finally over!

The JetLev company has produced a personal jetpack anyone can afford and learn to fly. Not only is it fun, it’s good clean fun because it uses water as fuel and propulsion. All you need is open water and an hour or so practicing basic flight maneuvering. What could be more simple?

Mankind has always dreamed of being able to fly. Some estimate that about one-in-three persons have had flying dreams. We express our yearnings for personal flight in our paintings, cartoons, science fiction, poetry, songs, films, and in our dreams. We invented balloons, airplanes and other devices to carry us into the air.

In the 1960’s, invention of the rocket belt brought us within reach of achieving personal flight. However, only a handful has ever flown one. Its short flight duration, weight, expensive and dangerous fuels, high noise levels, difficult controls, and extremely high risks of death and injuries would continue to thwart commercialization efforts.

Laughter Is The Universal Healer

In Funny Stuff, Life, Medical Benefits, Mind-Body, Quality of Life, Zowie Fun Facts on April 29, 2011 at 9:19 pm

A man goes to a psychiatrist and says, “Doc, my brother’s crazy, he thinks he’s a chicken.” The doctor says, “Why don’t you turn him in?” The guy says, “We would. But we need the eggs.”

If you just laughed out loud, or even released an involuntary chuckle, you probably experienced a surge of endorphins that increased your energy levels, boosted your mood and may have even decreased any aches or pains in your body. These effects are all part of laughter’s positive impact on our daily lives.

“A sense of humour allows us to cope with stress. If we’re able to see the funny side of life’s problems, we are less likely to become distressed, overwhelmed, anxious and depressed by them,” says Rod Martin, a professor at the University of Western Ontario whose research focuses on the psychology of humour.

Although much has been made of laughter’s healing properties, less is known about what actually makes us laugh. Read the rest of this entry »

Modern Crime Fighter Wears Superhero Suit

In Culture, Funny Stuff, Life, Wild Stuff on April 21, 2011 at 8:19 pm

Every child dreams of being a superhero, but then we grow up…well most of us.

One Sunday evening however, a local Seattle man got the surprise of his life when he happened upon a burglar trying to break into his car.

Fortunately, a masked man calling himself Phoenix Jones suddenly leaped from the shadows wearing a superhero suit and chased away the would be car thief. Then simply turned and disappeared again into the night. Needless to say the local man, who asked that he just be called Dan, was left with his mouth hanging open; but grateful for the strange though welcome assistance.

Phoenix Jones isn’t a real superhero. First of all he has no powers, other than obvious one of audacity, carries a taser, and keeps ”the suit” behind a secret door at his comic book store. You could see that coming though right?

But hey! He’s making a difference, as are the eight other members of his crime-fighting team. So, contrary to his comic book selling day-job, this is no laughing matter. And being a crime fighter by night has its share of danger. Although he wears a bullet-proof vest under “the suit”, patrolling Seattle’s streets can be a risky business. So far he’s been lucky he hasn’t encountered a villain with a gun, a knife…or a lawyer. The Empire Strikes Back: Retold in “Iconoscope”

In Funny Stuff, Social Media, Wild Stuff on April 21, 2011 at 12:57 am

Star Wars Iconoscope storyAn amazingly creative style of storytelling using only icons coined as: Iconoscope, is used to tell the entire Empire Strikes Back series of movies on a single page.

Has to be seen to be believed!

It’s pretty easily interpreted because it’s so symbolically well done. If you’ve seen the movies it will make you laugh. If you haven’t seen the movies, well first of all: FAIL, and secondly you may not totally get the subtleties of the pictograph. Nevertheless, you should be able to appreciate the art form. This will no doubt be copied and forwarded “mucho”.

Apparently the brainchild of Wayne Dorrington, a designer/illustrator living in London, who welcomes you to his blog appropriately:

“Welcome to the creative blog-folio of six foot-three slightly overweight ginger-bearded four-eyed socially awkward senior digital designer & illustrator Wayne Dorrington. This is a new blog, so I’ll be adding my back catalogue.” Read the rest of this entry »

Euro Fighter Flies Up Hercules’ Rear

In Funny Stuff, Wild Stuff on April 11, 2011 at 9:08 pm

This sequence of photos shows a camera crew marshalling in an F2 Typhoon Eurofighter for a close-up shot out of the tail of a C130 Hercules cargo plane, at almost 200 mph. It’s clearly a near miss!

We have no idea what prompted such a film making stunt, but we’re thinking it could be a demo video for parking a Eurofighter in a Hercules the hard way, a Red Bull commercial, or just a bunch of guys, soon to be court marshalled, trying to get on YouTube.

In any case, this is an impressive sequence that fortunately neither sucked the two crazy cameramen out through the exhaust intakes of the Typhoon, nor resulted in the Hercules having to make an emergency landing with a Typhoon hanging out of it’s *ss.

In the last photo you can practically count the nose hairs on the fighter pilot. If you live in Europe, it should be comforting to see your Euro-tax dollars at work. But you gotta admit, it’s pretty cool to watch. Read the rest of this entry »

Dave Barry’s year in review: 2010 a disaster? ‘Shore’ thing

In Culture, Funny Stuff, Life, Quality of Life on April 8, 2011 at 11:30 pm

Dave Barry is considered one of the funniest satire columnists in the country. His 2010 A Year in Review, is arguably one of his best. We include it here (lovingly) swiped entirely and intact from OregonLive.com’s: Dave Barry’s year in review: 2010 a disaster? ‘Shore’ thing. We have also added The Hilarious World of Dave Barry RSS Feed from his Miami Herald Blog in our feeds section lower right below – along with many other fine RSS Feeds we hope you’ll like. Enjoy!

By DAVE BARRY

Let’s put things into perspective: 2010 was not the worst year ever. There have been MUCH worse years. For example, toward the end of the Cretaceous Period, the Earth was struck by an asteroid that wiped out 75 percent of all the species on the planet. Can we honestly say we had a worse year than those species did? Yes, we can, because they were not exposed to “Jersey Shore.” Read the rest of this entry »
